Keep Your Commercial Fire Alarm Systems Up To Date

Commercial Fire Alarm and Smoke Detection Systems - SECURITEL - WI

If your business is among the majority these days, there have been changes and upheaval to your day-to-day operation. You may have had to drastically reduce the number of employees in the workplace at any given time, or even converted to 100% remote work.

It seems that things are finally starting to settle down and it may be time to start planning how to ramp your business back up for the new “normal.” Part of that process is getting your workplace ready for the return of employees and, in some cases, customers. A critical piece of this puzzle is testing your commercial fire alarm and smoke detection systems.

Why Do I Need to Test My Fire Alarm Systems?

Fire and smoke detection and alarm systems are usually quiet background players. These vigilant watchdogs hang out on your ceiling, making sure all is well at all hours of the day and night. Ideally, nothing happens and you can almost forget the systems are even there!

If ever there were to be an issue, however, they are ready to sound the alarm to keep you, your employees, and your customers safe. The fact that these systems are so vitally important for human safety means they must be kept in top shape, and that is where professional testing comes in to play.

Fire Alarm System Components

When you think of a fire alarm, you probably picture the small round units scattered throughout the ceilings in your home that occasionally chirp (in the middle of the night!) when the battery is dying. In a commercial or industrial setting, fire alarm systems are more complex, and usually include a range of different devices. For example, there will be additional alarm and notification devices in a commercial setting, including pull stations for manual triggering and extra notifiers with horns and strobe lights to ensure that everyone in the building is made aware of an alarm as quickly as possible.

Some businesses, especially industrial settings and gas stations, also include fire suppression. These include pressurized tanks with a fire suppressant chemical attached to chemical delivery systems.

What Happens During a Test?

Testing the fire and smoke detection, alarm, and suppression systems can be a technically and logistically challenging project. Depending on the size of the building (or buildings), there can be hundreds of detection and alarm devices all communicating with each other through a centralized control module, and each needs to be examined and tested.

During the testing process, technicians will go through the building to visually examine each device and then trip the alarm to verify proper communication with the control panel. Once all the components of the system are inspected and tested, documentation is both left on site and submitted to the local jurisdiction as required.
