Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is commonly produced during the combustion of fuels such as gasoline, natural gas, heating oil, and propane. In concentrated doses it can be deadly. If you have any fuel-burning appliances in your home, such as water heaters, dryers, or stoves, it is imperative that you have properly functioning carbon monoxide detectors. In fact, in many states, including Wisconsin, it is required by law to have CO Detectors in your home if you have any fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors vs Smoke Detectors

You might be thinking to yourself that you already have detectors on the ceilings around your house, so you are covered, right? Well, if those are simply smoke detectors, they are not designed to alert you to the presence of this deadly gas. Where to Install CO Detectors 

Carbon monoxide detectors must be installed on every floor of your home, including basements and some attics. Detectors should be placed within 10 feet of the bedroom doors. This will ensure full coverage and protection for your home by alerting you if any carbon monoxide has managed to seep in. Some of these detectors can be combination smoke and CO detectors, reducing the number of devices you need to install.

Wherever possible, it is best for the devices to communicate with each other, so that if one unit detects carbon monoxide, all of the alarms in the house will sound. This will make sure that everyone in the house is immediately alerted and can get out to safety as soon as possible.
