Office Building Security

Office Building Security

A great workplace must feel safe and secure before, during and after working hours. A full-featured commercial security system will let you feel confident that you and your employees are in the best of hands. Whether you’ve got 5 employees or 50, your commercial security system should be tailored to your business with a custom-designed plan that fits your office building, its location and traffic flow, all without breaking the bank.

What makes a good Office Security System?

The best office security systems are made to fit the space they’re operating in. While most businesses have a need for similar components in their security solution, such as CCTV, intruder alarms, fire and carbon monoxide detection, and access control, there are a number of factors that influence how they are used.

There are four criteria to consider when designing an office building security system:

  • the size of the building
  • types of tenants
  • location
  • level of security

All these present different challenges for design and have a bearing on what makes up the best commercial security solution. For example, an office building with multiple businesses as tenants might need a general access control system that allows the public into the building, but only allows access to the floor needed by specific individuals - preventing unauthorized access or uninvited guests to any of the tenants. A smaller office building might not share this need so the perfect fit may be a simpler access control system that only allows in employees and their escorted guests.

Access Control for Office Buildings

Access control has become even more relevant now that COVID is receding. Reduced foot traffic might mean opting to have less security personnel onsite in favor of tech-based solutions. While a simple security camera system and physical set of keys could get the job done for a small business, a keycard access system in combination with CCTV can provide the same level of security for larger businesses. Keycards issued to building tenants could have access to the building and their floor but might not have access to other floors. Keycards can also be disabled, in the event they are lost, stolen or in the case of employee turnover, which has become more of an issue for many businesses. Having a keycard means that locks can be controlled digitally, which presents even better opportunities for building safety: A keycard system might be programmed to lock out all access after business hours and could integrate with a building-wide fire safety or carbon monoxide detection system to open all doors in case of emergency.

CCTV in Office Buildings

Closed Circuit Television is an important part of your commercial office building security plan. Visible cameras are an important component - deterring would-be culprits of any kind, and also verifying that only authorized personnel are using your access control system. While a large office building may have a security office onsite monitoring your CCTV, a smaller business might not, especially after hours.
