Smart Home Security Essentials

By now, just about everyone is familiar with Smart Home technology but you may not be aware of how your Home Security system can integrate with Smart Home technology. For example, smart door locks are a convenience while also providing enhanced security. What all these technologies have in common is that they are internet enabled devices and therefore should be set up according to regularly updated security protocols.
Here’s a list of components that can make up a strong home security system:
Core Components
Base Station: The main hub of your home security system, your base station, receives alerts from the sensors in your home security system and transmits them to the monitoring station.
Smoke / Fire Detector: A smoke detector automatically senses the presence of smoke, as a key indicator of fire, and activates an alarm as well as signaling the base station.
Carbon Monoxide Detector: A carbon monoxide detector activates an alarm when sensing high levels of carbon monoxide within your home. Carbon monoxide detectors can save lives, as CO is odorless.
Glass Break Sensor: A glass break sensor activates based on loud noise, listening specifically for the noise profile of glass breaking and activating an alarm to ward off a would-be thief entering through a broken window.
Motion Sensor: Motion sensors send an alert when motion is detected in an area where none is expected.
Video Doorbell: A video doorbell allows you to remotely view who approaches your front door and speak to them via your smartphone. Whether it’s a friend stopping by while you’re out of town, a pesky solicitor, a mailman, or a package thief, you’ll keep an eye on who’s approaching your home and speak to them if necessary.
Peripherals for Smart Home Automation
Smart Pet Door: Pet doors create a security vulnerability – a smart pet door uses geofencing to make sure the door is always open for Fido, and closed for everyone else – even when you’re out of the house.
Smart Lights and Outlets: Network-enabled lighting allows you to easily automate when the lights in your house turn on and off. These are useful to save energy while allowing you to come home to a nice warmly lit house, in addition to warding off would-be burglars when they see lights on in the home.
Smart Home Thermostat: Raise and lower the temperature of your home remotely, saving you money and helping protect your home against cold spikes.
Freeze Sensors: A freeze sensor will send an alarm before your pipes freeze, giving you time to react to a malfunctioning heating system before you develop serious plumbing problems from a frozen or burst pipe.
Smart Garage Doors: Have you ever wondered if you forgot to close the garage door? Never wonder again – monitor and control your garage door from your smartphone.
Smart Locks: Control the locks to your home remotely from your smart phone with Smart Locks. Smart locks can be used to help out your kid who’s lost their keys, or to give you peace of mind when you’re wondering whether you locked the front door all the way. They can even be geofenced to automatically lock if no one’s home!
